Impact of lower limb heating and exercise on leg blood flow in trained elderly and young humans

The present study investigated the temperature, haemodynamic and tissue oxygenation responses to 90 min single-leg heating, single-leg dynamic knee-extensor exercise with heating, and control-leg (normothermic conditions) single-leg dynamic knee-extensor exercise in elderly and young participants. Dynamic knee-extensor exercise was performed at two workloads, 6W and 12W, continuously for 10 min (5 min for each workload). 


Sheet 1 outlines the data structure, abbreviations used and provides a useful schematic of the study protocol. 


Sheet 2 reports participant characteristics such as age, mass, height, sex, leg lean/non-lean volumes.


Sheet 3 illustrates the core and skin temperature, central haemodynamic and tissue oxygenation responses during 90 min passive single-leg heating, single-leg heating and dynamic knee-extensor exercise, and control leg knee-extensor exercise.


Sheet 4 reports the leg haeomdynamic responses (blood velocity, arterial diameter, blood flow, shear rate and vascular conductance) in the common, superficial, profunda femoral arteries and popliteal artery during 90 min passive single-leg heating, single-leg heating and dynamic knee-extensor exercise, and control leg knee-extensor exercise.
