Roads Shining Like River Uphill after Rain, April 2017
Roads Shining Like River Uphill after Rain was premiered by the Oxford Bach Soloists (conducted by Tom Hammond-Davies) in New College Chapel, Oxford on 15 April 2017. The solo cellist was Gabriella Swallow.
The composition aims to explore a new form for a choral work, and investigate how fragments of text by the poet Edward Thomas might be fashioned into a narrative which provides a quasi-dramatic arch. The piece also explores how a solo cello can be integrated into the fabric of choral music as a) an obligatto line, b) an additional ‘voice-without-words’ an c) as an accompaniment instrument.
